Yesterday, the Nigerian media industry—and indeed, the nation—said its final goodbye to a truly remarkable talent, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, popularly known as Sommie Maduagwu, the vibrant news anchor and TV presenter for ARISE News.
Sommie was laid to rest yesterday, Saturday, October 18, 2025, in her hometown in Anaocha, Anambra State, following a series of emotional funeral rites that saw colleagues, friends, family, and dignitaries pay their last respects.
A Star’s Light Extinguished Too Soon
Sommie’s passing on Monday, September 29, 2025, following a tragic armed robbery incident at her residence in Abuja, sent shockwaves across the country. At just 29, her life was cut short, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism, passion, and immense potential.
Before her untimely demise, Sommie was a rising star at ARISE News, known for her sharp delivery, engaging personality, and insightful reporting on pressing issues, including legal matters, women’s rights, and societal development.
But her achievements extended beyond the news desk. She was a trained lawyer, a model who was the first runner-up in the Miss Tourism Nigeria pageant in 2023, and a fervent gender equality advocate. Sommie was, in every sense of the word, a multi-talented go-getter who packed a lifetime of achievement into her 29 years.
The Last Journey
The burial in Anaocha marked the end of a solemn week of tributes and farewells. It followed an evening of tributes held in Abuja, a service of songs, and a final burial mass in Anambra, where mourners remembered her infectious smile, dedication to her craft, and the powerful impact she had on those around her.
While the pain of her loss remains raw, the outpouring of love and respect from all corners of society serves as a testament to the light she shone. From the tributes shared by her ARISE News family to messages from state governors and ministers, the consensus is clear: a great journalist and a wonderful soul has departed.
A Call for Reflection
Sommie’s death is not just a personal tragedy for her family and the ARISE News organisation; it is a profound loss for Nigerian journalism and a stark reminder of the security challenges facing our nation. It is a moment for all of us to reflect on the value of life and the urgent need for a safer society.
As we mourn, let us remember Sommie Maduagwu not by the tragic circumstances of her death, but by the vibrant life she lived, the stories she told, and the passion she brought to everything she did.
Rest in peace, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu. Your memory will forever be a guiding light.
